As stated, the two outdoor circuits that are offered are Marching Band and Drum Corps. Unlike in reality where these two realms of the pageantry arts are done at separate times of the year, they are done side by side here in Fantasy Pageantry Arts. The rules are the same, the captions are the same, much of everything is the same.
Directors can have up to three ensembles per circuit (likely your "elite ensemble" plus two junior or feeder ensembles, however the director wishes to do it).
This page will tell you everything you need to know for how the Outdoor Circuit season work in Fantasy Pageantry Arts.
CLASSES IN OUTDOOR CIRCUITS
Classes in both Marching Band and Drum Corps are offered in the same way. Classes are structured by the number of members in the ensemble. Directors are allowed a maximum of three (3) Marching Bands and three (3) Drum Corps. However, no two ensembles within the circuits can be in the same classification.
Each classification will be given their own number of Camp Allotment Points to spend before the season as well as their own number of weekly Rehearsal Allotment Points to spend as well.
DRUM CORPS CLASSIFICATIONS
Class 1A = Up to 60 Members
Class 2A = 61 - 100 Members
Class 3A = 101 - 150 Members
Class 4A = 151 or more Members
Unlike Drum Corps International, FPA allows Drum Corps to field however many number of members they choose.
MARCHING BAND CLASSIFICATIONS
Class 1A = Up to 80 Members
Class 2A = 81 - 140 Members
Class 3A = 141 - 200 Members
Class 4A = 201 or more Members
FPA allows Marching Bands to be however large the directors want their ensembles to be.
CAPTIONS FOR DRUM CORPS AND MARCHING BAND
There are three major captions: General Effect, Visual, and Music. Each major caption is broken down into two to three sub-captions.
General Effect (GE) - 4 Judges @ 10 Points Each = 40 Points Total
In total General Effect is broken down to Music General Effect (MGE) and Visual General Effect (VGE). There are two judges for per
sub-caption, each awarding up to a maximum of ten points for a total major caption value of forty points out of the possible overall 100
points that can be earned each week.
Visual (VIS) - 3 Judges @ 10 Points Each = 30 Points Total
In total Visual is broken down to Performance (VP), Ensemble (VE), and Color Guard (CG). There is one judge per sub-caption, each awarding up to a maximum of ten points for a major caption value of thirty points out of the possible overall 100 points that can be earned each week.
Music (MUS) - 3 Judges @ 10 Points Each = 30 Points Total
In total Music is broken down to Ensemble (ME), Winds, and Percussion (PERC). There is one judge per sub-caption, each awarding up to
a maximum of ten points for a total major caption value of thirty points out of the possible overall 100 points that can be earned each week.
RATINGS FOR THE OUTDOOR CIRCUITS
Five ratings offered for the Outdoor Season in Fantasy Pageantry Arts.
DISTINGUISHED MASTER
While an official rating in FPA, there are no scoring standards. Instead, in order to receive this honor every judge in all captions must give you the rating of MASTER (95% of caption or sub-caption value and above).
MASTER (I) = 95+
These ensembles set new standards in all things Fantasy Pageantry Arts. They are the “Cream of the Crop” and they know how to give performances of the highest caliber. While there may be minimal errors seen, as no performance is perfect, this is as close to perfection as you are going to get.
EXPERT (II) = 85-94.9999
An exceptional performance if there ever was one. These ensembles have what it takes to give masterful performances. However, the few errors that are made will make that difference from Expert to Master. Regardless though, a joy to watch without a doubt.
OUTSTANDING (III) = 70-84.9999
A polished performance, but there is work to be done if they want to make it to the top. A notable performance, albeit one with noticeable flaws.
PROFICIENT (IV) = 55-69.9999
A performance of modest quality, but far from exceptional. Errors are indeed evident to the naked eye, but there is notice of effort being made throughout the performance to bring the program to the next level and beyond.
DEVELOPING (V) = Up to 54.9999
As the rating name suggests, these ensembles are in the developing phases of their programs. There is still much to do and a long way to go, but if caught at the right moment, great things can potentially be seen in these ensembles.
CAMP POINT ALLOTMENTS
Camp Point Allotments are what is spent at the time of registration and is a one
time thing. These points will carry on with you for the entire season and cannot be adjusted without the express permission of the FPA Executive Director.
Points are spent on what they want to focus on at the beginning on all of the captions scored in FPA: Music General Effect, Visual Effect, Visual Performance, Visual Ensemble, Color Guard, Music Ensemble, Music Winds, Music Percussion. There is a hard rule of Caption Caps. This means that each caption is never allowed more than twenty percent (20%) of the allowance of points for each ensemble.
Though the classes are done by size of ensemble, there are still differences in
each of the classes. Primarily… the resources said ensembles have given their class.
As such, AAAA (4A) ensembles will be given more to work with and A (1A) ensembles will be given less. The table below will explain how many points are given for each classification.
Class 1A ensembles receive 350 points for Camp Allotments.
Class 2A ensembles receive 375 points for Camp Allotments.
Class 3A ensembles receive 400 points for Camp Allotments.
Class 4A ensembles receive 425 points for Camp Allotments.
REHEARSAL POINT ALLOTMENTS
Rehearsal Points work just like Camp Points with two exceptions:
1) Rehearsal Points are submitted once a week.
2) At certain points of the season, point allotments for each classification increase by a small factor.
There will be opportunities to earn additional points to your allotment. These opportunities will include continuing to place well throughout the season as well as donating to the FPA to help maintain the site and its operating costs.
Rehearsal point allowances for all ensembles are set in weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, and 8, increasing by 20 points each of those weeks.
Class 1A ensembles start with 490 points for Rehearsal Allotments.
Class 2A ensembles start with 520 points for Rehearsal Allotments.
Class 3A ensembles start with 550 points for Rehearsal Allotments.
Class 4A ensembles start with 580 points for Rehearsal Allotments.
For Rehearsal Allotment Points, all weekly submissions are due each Friday at Midnight Eastern time.
Late submissions and/or non-submittals will result in penalties being given to the overall score as well as potential loss of caption awards and credits earned.
